Outbreak of conjunctivitis in Havana

HAVANA, September 17 (www.cubanet.org) - Public health authorities in Havana have issued a warning to the population concerning an outbreak of conjunctivitis and measures to be taken for protection against contagion.

Although authorities did not release the number of those already infected, it is believed to be in the hundreds.

Several live-in students have been sent home for treatment and to contain the infection.

Patients affected by the disease have been told to apply cold-water compresses, to boil their clothes and avoid direct contact with others.

Doctors called the outbreak typical for this time of year and said it falls short of an epidemic, adding that it does not pose a risk to health other than discomfort to those suffering from the disease.
