Police
assign two neighbors to watch Havana dissident
HAVANA, September 15 (www.cubanet.org) - Political
police have assigned two neighbors to watch dissident
and ex-political prisoner Javier García,
warning him that "one more misstep"
will land him in jail.
The two neighbors, identified only by their last
names, are a lieutenant of counterintelligence
by the name of Palacios, and a civilian by the
name of Carnero.
García is accused of "sabotaging
a meeting of his neighborhood Committee for the
Defense of the Revolution."
As García explains it, his problems began
when he lost his temper upon hearing the thoughts
of José Martí, Cuba's national hero,
distorted at the Committee meeting one story below
his home.
He says, "In a fit of anger, I picked up
a book I have, 'In his own words,' about Martí's
thought and interrupted the meeting downstairs
to read some passages from it."
According to García, the meeting broke
up in confusion and the next day, September 4,
he was arrested by Interior Ministry officers.
After holding him for several days, State Security
officers warned him that this was the third time
they had to move against him for counterrevolutionary
activities, and that any further incidents would
land him directly in prison, García said.
