Wife
fears for journalist husband on hunger strike
in Cuba
HAVANA, September 15 (www.cubanet.org) - "If
they turned me into a hero, now they are going
to have to turn me into a martyr," said imprisoned
independent journalist Normando Hernández
to his wife after 10 days into a hunger strike.
Hernández, along with five other dissidents
imprisoned at the Boniato prison, in Santiago
de Cuba province went on strike at the beginning
of the month to protest poor conditions at the
prison.
Since then, all of them have been transferred
to separate prisons. Hernández was sent
to the Kilometer 5 ½ prison in Pinar del
Río, at the other end of the island. Hernández,
said his wife, told her the conditions at this
prison are no better and that, therefore, the
reason for their strike still stands.
Hernández' wife and his father, who received
special permission to visit him, said prison officials
told them the hunger strike represented a serious
violation of prison regulations and that until
he gives it up, his situation will not improve
nor will he be allowed more visits.
"We are very discouraged," said Hernández'
wife, explaining that she found him very thin
and suffering from high blood pressure and irregular
heart beat.
