Abuse
by undercover cops in Cuba
HAVANA, September 8 (www.cubanet.org) - Three
undercover police arrested a 70-year-old man with
such force on Thursday morning, August 21, that
a riled-up crowd got involved until uniformed
officers intervened, apparently arresting one
of the undercover cops.
Initially, the 70-year-old was selling newspapers
and magazines at the entrance to the main Havana
bus station when the three undercover police handcuffed
him and almost tore off two of his fingernails.
The man, standing bleeding against a wall, complained
the cuffs hurt him.
At this point, several passersby started calling
the undercovers abusive and demanded they release
the man. One of the three refused to give his
name and instead threatened to arrest any who
continued complaining.
The three then dragged the man to the Zapata
Street police station, near the city's main cemetery.
Several people, concerned about the man's fate,
followed the police while others went for help
to the Interior Ministry building that's across
from the bus station.
A patrol car and one uniformed officer from the
Special Troops who was on guard at the entrance
of the Interior Ministry intervened, apparently
arresting at least one of the undercovers. They
took the cuffs off the man's wrists and took him
to the Calixto García hospital in the patrol
car.
Several bystanders stayed at the entrance of
the Interior Ministry building calling the detained
undercover a goon. They were dispersed by uniformed
police shortly.
