Schools for tourism industry provide escape hatch in Cuba

HAVANA, September 5 (www.cubanet.org) - Some of the choicest jobs in the Cuban economy are those related to tourism, so entry into the Formatur schools, which train industry workers, is highly sought after. Students are not only after the perks and benefits of working in the dollar economy, but sometimes look upon the job as a springboard out of the island.

All personnel, from gardeners to room maids to facilities' managers, go through these schools, which receive priority treatment in the allocation of resources by the Cuban government.

A number of tourist guides end up marrying foreigners as a way out of the island. Some have even been known to pay, reportedly up to 8,000 dollars, the foreigners for the marriage contract as a ticket out.
