7th
and 8th graders no longer to work in agriculture
during the school day
HAVANA, September 4 (www.cubanet.org) - Students
in the 7th and 8th grades will no longer do agricultural
work as part of their schooling, as they have
for several decades, but 9th graders will continue
to do so.
All three grades will face a long school day
when classes resume Monday, September 8, said
Education Minister Luis Ignacio Gómez.
In other changes announced to parents before
the start of the school year, teachers will no
longer specialize; there will now be two teachers
per 30 students, one specializing in the Humanities
and the other in Science. In each school room,
there will be a 20-inch TV set and a VCR, for
the audiovisual program.
The school day will consist of nine class periods
and other activities, with an hour and 45 minutes
of rest. The students will receive a strong snack
that Education officials are calling "the
Comandante's snack."
Education officials also announced that students
will be receiving new uniforms and released the
new regulations that forbid the "excessive"
use of accessories for girls and dyed hair and
earrings for boys. There is an across the board
prohibition against "symbols fomenting ideological
diversionism."
