Havana hospital operating room closed for six months due to infection

HAVANA, Cuba, October 13 (www.cubanet.org) - The ophthalmology operating room in Havana's showcase Hermanos Ameijeiras hospital has been closed for over six months now due to contamination by staphylococcus bacteria. Some patients have been waiting for over a year for surgery at the hospital, the only one doing laser procedures for cataracts on the island. The waiting list for the surgery runs over 3,000 patients. Ada Cabrera, 75, has been waiting for over two years now. "First, there were no lenses available," she says, "and now, the operating room is contaminated." The waiting time to see an ophthalmologist can be up to eight months; for some other procedures at the hospital it can run a year.
