Cuban police return typewriter seized
as evidence seven years ago
HAVANA, December 18 (www.cubanet.org)
/ Seven years after seizing a typewriter
as evidence, police called in dissident
Javier García and told him to take
his machine back. No explanation given.
"I still don't understand why they
returned it; it's very unusual," said
García.
García, who lives in the El Cerro
district of Havana, is a member of the executive
committee of the Young Cuba Popular Party,
one of many groups who oppose the government.
On December 6, García said, "very
early, at about 7:00 a.m., an official from
the municipality showed up at my house with
a summons for me to report to the provincial
depot. When I arrived, a policeman brought
out the typewriter. Even without a ribbon
and with a broken part held with baling
wire, I recognized it as my own. I had given
it up for lost long ago. I noticed the machine
had seen quite a bit of use. It came with
the seizure documentation and my personal
information of so long ago."
The machine is an ancient, U. S.-made Underwood.
"On it," García said, "were
written dozens of reports of human rights
violations and other documents of the opposition."
