Fire damages seamen's hiring hall in Havana

HAVANA, December 16 (www.cubanet.org) - A fire of unknown origin caused extensive damage December 12 at the building housing the offices of Agemarca, the Cuban government's hiring office for merchant seamen.

The heaviest losses were concentrated in the areas housing the personnel and passport archives, which were reported to be gutted.

Eyewitnesses reported the fire started on the third-floor office of the Agemarca director, identified only as General Abascal, who was out of the country at the time of the fire. From there, fire spread quickly through the wooden building.

Agemarca does all the paperwork for Cuban merchant seamen working in either Cuban or foreign ships.
