Nurse fired for signing Varela project petition

HAVANA, December 12 (www.cubanet.org) - A nurse at the Carlos Finlay military hospital in Havana was fired for signing the Varela project petition, asking for political change under provisions of the Cuban Constitution.

Rosa María Esquivel, 34, had been working at the hospital for 12 years. She said she had been having problems with hospital administrators, who had been pressuring her to attend political manifestations and to do volunteer work, both common features of daily life in Cuba. She also said she had been censured for not having paid union dues or the assessment for the territorial militia.

"Thursday they told me they had decided to let me go, that they had sent the petition to the Ministry of Public Health, but nonetheless not to bother going back to work while they waited for approval," said Esquivel, who added that she would contest her firing at every possible level.
