Parksville chiropractor, Dr. Larry Smith
is headed to Cuba where he will address
the Cuban medical community.
This venture began last spring when Smith
became aware of an opportunity to spend
a few weeks of his time in Cuba as a volunteer
chiropractor, treating the residents of
a small community.
With the aid of his contact at the Chiropractic
Overseas Relief organization, plans were
made for him to depart on Dec. 11 and spend
two weeks in Nuevo Gerona.
Based inthe U.K., CORe was established
for the purpose of bringing chiropractic
care to countries and to people where there
is none. It is strictly a volunteer organization,
run by chiropractors, based on the premise
that if enough chiropractors donate one
to four weeks of their time in a year, then
free clinics can be opened and staffed on
a year-round basis.
A CORe clinic was established in Nuevo
Gerona, Isla de La Juventud, Cuba in April
1995, and has been received enthusiastically
by the health care community.
After all travel, passport, visa and medical
arrangements had been made, the news arrived
that the program had been temporarily suspended.
It appears that chiropractic may become
part of a Cuban Holistic National Health
Centre, but having only three members on
staff to administer the project, the National
Director has had to delay the reopening
of the project.
Smith's new mission is to maintain the
chiropractic profile among the "Pineros"
(the name given to the local people from
the Isle of Pines).
He will meet formally and informally with
the local medics who have referred patients
to the CORe project in the past and will
also have the opportunity to present a paper
at one of their meetings.
By gathering further support from the local
medical community, it is hoped that chiropractic
will have a greater presence in the Cuban
health care system.
"I have tried to help spread the chiropractic
word in our community and I now have a chance
to do so in Cuba," said Smith.
Copies of the paper Smith will present
to the Cuban medical establishment are available
by calling248-6333.
