Cuban independent journalist urges Castro to undertake a worldwide amnesty program

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec. 2 (www.cubanet.org) - Independent journalist Santiago du Bouchet has sent a letter to president Fidel Castro asking him to undertake a worldwide amnesty campaign for political prisoners, including those in Cuba.

"The enormous authority that you have gives you an extraordinary jurisdiction, also grave responsibilities," he said in a letter dated November 17. "At stake is the destiny of a heroic people that has a right to prosperity and happiness."

Du Bouchet, who described himself as someone who approved of much of what the revolution had brought, said he had never before written to Castro but felt the time to do so had come.

"Show a harsh world that the bank of kindness is not bankrupt," he wrote. "Nothing stops you from doing it: think about it."
