Civic-minded
protesters labeled "dissidents" in Cuba
HAVANA, August 13 (www.cubanet.org) - A group
of 37 intellectuals in the small port city of
Batabanó, south of Havana, who signed a
letter to the local government seeking to address
certain municipal problems were labeled "dissidents"
by a Communist party official.
"Evidently, the concerns of citizens who
wanted to address certain problems was interpreted,
as is customary in Cuba, the wrong way,"
said one of the signers, who asked not to be identified
by name.
The group sent a letter to local Communist party
officials three months ago, asking for a dialogue
on matters of interest to the community.
"In reality," said one of the signers,
"the letter was based on a project to come
up with some ideas about certain municipal problems
and their possible solutions."
The letter listed concerns pertaining to the
arts and cultural areas, in addition to social
services, such as street repair, lack of public
lighting, garbage pick-up, alcoholism, suicide,
and entertainment outlets for youth.
Party officials have not responded to the letter.
