Cuban
workers unhappy with schedule change
NUEVA GERONA, August 11 (www.cubanet.org) -
Workers in 58 establishments in the retail sector
in the Isle of Youth are unhappy with a recent
change in working hours.
The establishments, most of which distribute
foodstuffs, are now open from Mondays to Saturdays,
7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Sundays, 7:00 a.m.
to 11:00 a.m.
The director of the municipal commercial services,
Juan Ramón Marrero, said the "change
is due to a new plan, ordered by the minister
of Internal Commerce, Bárbara Castillo,
with the objective of diversifying supply and
collecting money in circulation."
Marrero said the managers of the establishments
"must develop within their capabilities,
more variable supply to increase sales and profits."
"We have received complaints from the workers,
who are unhappy with the measure, since it wasn't
discussed with the workers," said Héctor
Pacha, of the independent Workers' Federation.
He said the workers also complain about their
pay, 148 pesos a month.
"It's no secret," said Pacha, "that
the economy is going backwards, so the government
implements anti-worker measures to safeguard its
tumbling economic policy."
