Illegal lottery thriving on the Isle of Youth

NUEVA GERONA, Cuba, September (Carlos Sepa Maceira / UPECI) – Widespread illegal gambling in La Demajagua, located on the Isle of Youth, has started to cause consternation among local residents.

The issue was discussed with Roberto García Díaz, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in the municipality, during a recent visit to La Demajagua.

Although the lottery was abolished by the government, a local version exists, using numbers drawn by the lottery in the Venezuelan states of Zulia and Tachira and the state of Florida in the United States.

"Police operations carried out over the past few months to stop illegal gaming have not been successful," said one local resident.
