HAVANA, September (José Izquierdo/Grupo de Trabajo Decoro)
The removal of Oscar Macias from the Cuban National Baseball team has caused
indignation throughout the island and prompted a lively discussion on radio.
Macias, who batted .340 with 17 homeruns during the past season, did not
accompany the national team to Canada for a tournament last month.
As a protest, the second baseman took himself out of the lineup during the
playoffs between Los Habaneros, this team, and the Centrales.
Sports commentator Roberto Pacheco of Radio Rebelde said, "What
happened to Macias deserves to be deeply analyzed by the leadership of the
Institute of Physical Sports Education and Recreation so that action can be
taken against those who committed arbitrary actions like those to the detriment
of baseball in Cuba."
Jorge González Cubillas, a former Radio Rebelde correspondent, said
Macias was the latest in a string of athletes who have been the victims of
favoritism.
