GÜINES, September 18 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - The Armed Forces Ministry created a commission to study the
pollution of the Mayabeque river, in Havana province, by a canning factory owned
and operated by the Armed Forces. The pollution had been
reported by
Cuba's independent journalists back in July.
The factory, Conservas Mayabeque, located in the town of Güines, south
of Havana, has been dumping hundreds of liters of oil and manufacturing waste in
the river daily.
The commission, composed of high-rank officers of the Armed Forces,
inspected the area adjacent to the plant, finding a thick coating of burnt fuel
oil and grease. They also heard the complaints of dozens of neighbors.
"The officers promised to solve the problem promptly and assured us the
factory will not dump more pollutants in the river," said Eugenio Alonso, a
local resident.
Compounding the problem, the river's waters are used to irrigate a variety
of crops downstream from the factory.
