GÜINES, November 19 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - At least 25 nurses were laid off November 14 at the South
Polyclinic in Güines, Havana province and were reportedly offered jobs in
the municipal hospital, which at least some have refused, citing poor working
conditions.
A highly-placed public health official, who spoke on condition of anonymity,
said a readjustment is currently in progress in the area in order to cover jobs
at the municipal hospital, which doesnt have enough nurses.
The laid off nurses, some of whom have more than 25 years experience in the
field, saw the situation in a different light. One said: "It doesnt
make sense for the government to create courses to train nurses while we are
deprived of jobs we have had for more than 20 years." She refused the
transfer to the hospital.
