CABAÑAS, November 6 (Moisés L. Rodríguez, Grupo Decoro
/ www.cubanet.org) - A woman who only gave her first name as Julia and her three
sons, ages 12, 14 and 20, have been living for the last three months in the
abandoned outhouse of a facility formerly used for giving parties in Cabañas,
a small town west of Havana.
The family improvised a roof for the outhouse and managed to carve out
sleeping quarters in another small building that was formerly used as a storage
shack.
In August, Julia and her sons had to vacate their former home because its
owner asked for it, and they found themselves with nowhere to go.
The family have a bed of sorts, cook on an improvised burner with wood, and
light themselves at night with a kerosene bottle with a wick sticking out of it.
They hand carry their water from the tanks of a nearby restaurant, but have been
warned to stop the practice because it is in violation of sanitary regulations.
