VILLA CLARA, May 29 (Omar Ruiz Hernández, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Physicians and other health care workers in Matagua, Villa
Clara province, complained bitterly about the conditions of the medical
facilities in which they work, during a recent meeting called by the official
syndicate.
"Termite-infested doors and windows, open sewers, and lack of running
water in dispensaries which means someone must hand-carry buckets of water from
the river were just some of the complaints presented at the meeting," said
Dr. Ismell Iglesias Martínez.
Public health officials addressed the complaints by pointing out they dont
have the resources to perform needed repairs and solve other problems.
Most of those present at the meeting were family physicians, who are paid an
average of 300 pesos a month, or 11.53 dollars at the going exchange rate.
Perhaps not surprisingly, there are a number of dispensaries without
doctors, which adds to the others workload, since they must cover the
patient load of the vacant dispensaries.
