HOLGUIN, May 27 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO / www.cubanet.org)
Anti-government activist Arnoldo Nicot Roque, 37, was arrested at home May 23 in
Moa, Holguín province.
According to Nicot's parents, the sector chief of police, identified only as
Medina, and two other officers came by the house at 10:00 p.m. and told them
they were taking Nicot "to have a talk" and would bring him back soon.
Some time after midnight, Nicot's parents went to the police station, where
they were told he was accused of threatening Blanca Rodríguez Hernández,
the coordinator of the local Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, and
would remain in custody.
Nicot is the provincial coordinator in Holguín of the National
Council for Civil Rights. His arrest came hours after he met with other
activists to plan a march to the provincial prison to demand freedom for
political prisoners.
Nicot's parents and other area activists say his arrest is due to his
anti-government activism and the threat charges are just a ruse.
