Pregnant prisoner looses unborn child due to physical abuses at woman's prison in Guantánamo

(GUANTÁNAMO/CUBA/May 27/Puenteinfocubamiami.org) - Prisoner Lázara Leonor de la Paz Serrano is recovering at prison ward 2-P of the Provincial Surgical Hospital "Agustino Neto", after a miscarriage due to the physical abuses she received at the hands of prison authorities in the Provincial Prison for Women, while being taken to a punishment cell.

Apparently, a ruthless beating provoked the abortion. Her husband, Luis Vargas Lescay, asks all human rights organizations to denounce before the international public opinion this violent act.

Penal population affected by the contaminated water they drink at Guantánamo

(GUANTÁNAMO/CUBA/ May 27th/Puenteinfocubamiami.org) – Political prisoner Alexander Lobaina Jiménez has blemishes on his body as a consequence of the parasites acquired from the contaminated drinking water, at the provincial prison "Combinado de Guantánamo".

According to Lobaina Jiménez, the rest of the penal population suffers the same condition without any action being taken by the authorities to correct this problem. Repeated requests have been made by the prisoners due to the putrid smell of the water, which is contaminated with the residue water from the sugar mill.

Medical attention is regularly denied to political prisoners.

Prisoner dies from tuberculosis in a penal ward in Guantánamo

(GUANTÁNAMO/CUBA/ May27th/Puenteinfocubamiami.org) - On Wednesday, May 15th, a 30 year old prisoner named Juan Carlos Morales Cantillo, died from tuberculosis in the prison ward 2-P of the Provincial Surgical Hospital "Agustino Neto" in Guantánamo.

Morales Cantillo was transferred to the hospital on the 3rd of May of this year, suffering from TB and cancer. At the time of the admission, the cancer had not been diagnosed.

The exact high number of prisoners infected with tuberculosis in "Combinado de Guantánamo" is unknown. This condition exists because authorities at the penitentiary are not taking measures to remedy the situation, they place healthy prisoners with those who are infected, using this chronic disease as means of massive contamination, which is aided by the poor sanitary conditions that exist in the prison, in addition to the scarcity of food (many times spoiled when available), and the lack of proteins and vitamins.

From Guantánamo, Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller, National Delegate of the Democratic Party 30th of November "Frank País" and COOCE Coordinator. Given to The Information Bridge Cuba Miami on May 27th, 2002.
