Fuel scarcity hampers agriculture

PINAR DEL RIO, May 22 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Summer crop plantings are virtually at a standstill in Consolación del Sur municipality, Pinar del Río province, due to lack of fuel, according to a reliable source.

Consolación del Sur, considered the most important agricultural area in the province, has been affected by a nine-months dry spell, and the crops need irrigation and fertilizing, the two activities requiring scarce fuel.

The crops primarily affected are short-term food crops and the upcoming tobacco crop.

Specialists familiar with the area, once known as the island’s western breadbasket, point out that nowadays it cannot even supply food for its immediate surroundings.
