FROM CUBA

Subsistence recycling

HAVANA, May 14 (Lucas Garve, CPI / www.cubanet.org) - The present economic crisis in Cuba has impelled more people to scavenge recyclable goods as a way of making ends meet.

Daily one can see people around refuse bins looking for cardboard, cloth, paper, bottles, metals, and plastics, which can be sold to the government's Raw Materials Recovery company by the pound.

Word in the streets is the garbage bins behind the dollar stores yield the most valuable materials.

Others engage in recycling on their own, refilling, for example, perfume bottles, and selling them, typically for 15 to 20 pesos. Deodorant tubes go for 15 pesos. The primary market for these is found among people who don't have access to dollars.
