PINAR DEL RIO, May 13 ( Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - A medical commission in Guane, Pinar del Río province,
censored Dr. Jesús Manuel Cruz for having directed a patient to a private
practitioner as a source of a common analgesic.
Dr. Cruz on May 8 told the patient he needed acetaminophen, which was not
available in the State pharmacies, and referred him to the independent practice
of Dr. Janey Hernández.
The medical commission based its criticism in that Dr. Cruz, from his office
in the municipal polyclinic, may not refer patients for any reason to private
practitioners, who are considered illegal here.
"The patient," said Dr. Cruz, "needed acetaminophen, and
there wasnt any in the State pharmacies. Even several days after I was
censored, it still wasnt available in any pharmacy in Guane."
The act of censure could adversely affect the monthly evaluations that Dr.
Cruz undergoes every month, and eventually delay the exit permit which he has
been awaiting for more than three years to join his family in the United States.
