Cultural facilities close in austerity drive

HAVANA, May 8 (Lucas Garve, CPI / www.cubanet.org) - Nine museums, seven libraries and several cultural centers have been closed indefinitely due to lack of operating funds.

In Guanabacoa, for instance, across the bay form Havana, the museum, the municipal library and the ‘Juan Arrondo’ cultural center have closed because the buildings housing them need repairs, said a reliable source.

Government investment in sports and culture amounts to more than three percent of total investment. The closings, however, contrast with the government’s propaganda claims regarding its attention to culture.
