HAVANA, June 21 (Víctor M. Domínguez, Lux Info Press) - The
owner of a butcher stand in a free market in Old Havana stabbed a 21-year-old
man as he tried to steal a ham June 11.
Julio García died within minutes of being stabbed in the chest. He
was unemployed. His assailant said he was weary of having his meats stolen.
The common wisdom among regulars is that such incidents are not unusual. A
number of psychiatric cases, mentally retarded and pensioners ambulate through
the markets, where pork, for example, sells for between 50 and 70 pesos a
kilogram (2.2 lbs.), compared to an average daily income for a worker of eight
pesos, and less than half that for those subsisting on pensions.
