HAVANA, June 11 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) - An oil
spill and a spreading garbage pile surround the only pastry shop in the town of
San Cristóbal, Pinar del Río province.
The oil, which leaks out of the facilitys fuel tank, has been pooling
next to one of the buildings walls. The garbage pile grows daily from the
accumulated refuse dumped by residents.
"This situation... is evidence of the government officials lack
of interest, who havent done whats necessary to eliminate the spill,"
said Lázaro Lemus, a local activist.
Another activist, Alberto Hernández, said: "Residents walk
through the area, skirting the environmental contamination as if it were an
insoluble problem, which is evidence of the governments indolence, since
they are the only ones with the means of solving the problem, and also evidence
of the lack of education of the residents of San Cristóbal, who seem to
be more interested in waiting in line at the pastry shop to try to obtain some
of the products on sale, when there are any."
