CAMAGUEY, June 7 (Lázara Ayón Díaz, ACP /
www.cubanet.org) - In an unprecedented action, three independent journalists
applied for the legalization of their Agencia Camagüeyana de Prensa (Camagüey
Press Agency) and their monthly publication El Camagüeyano.
Since its inception several years ago, independent journalism in the island
has been barely tolerated and consistently deemed illegal by the government. By
law and by custom since shortly after the 1959 Revolution, all journalism has
been subservient to the Communist Party and the State.
Journalists Ramón Hugo Armas, Alejandro Gonzáles, and Luis
Guerra presented their application to Ministry of Justice official Ruth Torres,
who told them they would have to speak to the appropriate officials. The
journalists said they based their petition in articles 1, 53, 55, and 63 of the
Cuban Constitution and in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, of which Cuba is a signatory.
