Sanitation standards drop after campaign ends

HAVANA, June 1 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - Shortly after the official announcement that the campaign to erradicate the mosquito responsible for the transmission of dengue fever was successfully concluded, new sources of infection and accumulated trash have been found in Santos Suárez, a neighborhood in the municipality of Diez de Octubre, Havana.

"One of these was discovered outside the Pasteur polyclinic the morning of May 29," said a source who works in the Public Health field.

The source of contamination was detected in a tank by the vehicle entrance of the clinic.

Garbage pick-up has also become more irregular, and deposits of refuse are starting to accumulate in street corners.

"The re-apparition of breeding grounds for the mosquito shows that the priority assigned by the government to the erradication campaign was temporary," said one local resident.
