HAVANA, July 8 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) - Jailed
journalist Léxter Téllez Castros health has worsened since
he went on a hunger strike June 27, according to reports by his mother and fiancée,
who visited him recently.
"On Friday the 5th, Léxters mother and I visited him. They
had him in the hospital and were feeding him intravenously. His blood pressure
was low, we were told, and his lips were dry. He almost couldnt speak, but
he said he was prepared to die if he wasnt either freed of tried,"
said Daimarelis Pérez, Téllez fiancée.
Téllez was arrested as he covered a protest march by a group of
activists in front of the provincial hospital in Ciego de Ávila March 4.
The activists were protesting the beating of independent journalist Jesús
Álvarez Castillo, by State Security agents.
In turn, they were beaten themselves and arrested, along with Téllez
and another journalist, Carlos Brizuela Yera. None have been tried, nor has a
date been set for trial.
