Foreign minister’s next-door neighbor knifed at home

HAVANA, December 17 (José Fornaris, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - An attorney who lives next door to Cuban foreign minister Felipe Pérez Roque was knifed eight times at home in broad daylight. The victim, whose name wasn’t released, was in serious condition at the "Enrique Cabrera" hospital.

His aggressors were reportedly two men, who knocked at his door at approximately 10:00 a.m. posing as workers in the mosquito eradication campaign. The motive was apparently robbery; some video equipment and electronic games were said to be missing from the house. The two were said to have turned on the gas before leaving, but the victim managed to make his way to the porch and get help from a policeman directing traffic at the corner, according to a neighbor.

Shortly after the crime, police cordoned off the block to all traffic. At least 10 police led by a lieutenant colonel could be observed around the premises conducting the preliminary investigation.

So far, the government press has taken no notice of the incident.
