FROM CUBA

The cost of telling the truth

Rafael Ferro Salas, Grupo de Trabajo Decoro

PINAR DEL RÍO, December (www.cubanet.org) - The factory’s general manager had been speaking to the employees for three hours when a voice from the back said: "I don’t agree with what you say. All the time we are being asked to give a little bit more, while the ones in charge keep living well at our expense."

There was silence and then an electric buzz that suggested no one before had challenged the general manager that way. No one wanted to be in the man’s shoes, either.

The general manager, from the podium, looked at the man who had so unexpectedly spoken and bit his lip. After a few moments, he finished what he had to say and left the room followed by the secretary and the administrator.

Some of the workers approached the man who had spoken, a mechanic with many years of service, whom they all respected and appreciated.

"I think you went crazy, man. The least they’ll do is fire you," said one worker. "You’ll be without a job and you have a family to feed."

"I know, but at least I had the pleasure of calling him a liar in front of all of you. It’s always the same, they ask us to sacrifice and they continue living well."

As he spoke, the secretary walked up.

"Miguel, the general manager asked me to take you to his office."

He walked behind her, while the others looked on.
