Theft leaves beach-goers unprotected
HAVANA, March 29 (Moisés Leonardo
Rodríguez, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org)
- A foreign tourist had his belongings stolen
at an east Havana beach March 21 and police,
who detained all lifeguards for questioning,
left bathers at the beach unprotected for
the rest of the afternoon.
The incident happened at Guanabo, just
east of the city. Daniel Sabatier, one of
the lifeguards who was detained, said the
chief lifeguard himself called police when
the tourist first complained about the theft.
When police arrived, Sabatier said, the
tourist pointed the lifeguards out, since
they were stationed about fifteen feet from
where the man had left his belongings.
Police then took the three lifeguards to
the Guanabo police station, where they remained
from afternoon until about nine-thirty in
the evening.
"Since police did not notify Aquatic
Security they were detaining us, bathers
were left unprotected at a time when the
surf was rough," said Sabatier.
Sabatier said they were treated as common
criminals at first, "but when they
ran us through their computers, they changed
their tune, because none of us have police
records, even though they probably learned
I'm a dissident."
Here Sabatier added a peculiar comment:
"Many government adherents, police
included, are backing off or at least stepping
carefully, because they too know things
here are bad and getting worse."
