Student knives another at technical school

HAVANA, March (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - One student died as a result of knife wounds after a fight with a fellow student at the end of February.

William Vel, 16, was stabbed twice by Yosangri Matos, 15. Both were students at the "René Ramos Latour" technical school, and the fight took place near the school shortly after classes.

"Yosangri fled the scene, but gave himself up to police afterwards," said students who witnessed the incident but who didn't want to be identified. The Cuban press has not mentioned the incident.

The students agreed that bearing knives and even sometimes guns are common practices at the school.

The students said the day after the fight, teachers at the school did body searches of all students.

The school, located in the Arroyo Naranjo municipality of Havana, is for students learning crafts such as that of machinist or auto mechanic.
