Water service interrupted in San Antonio de los Baņos

HAVANA, March 22 (www.cubanet.org) Residents of San Antonio de los Baños had to make do without running water for over two days at the beginning of the month when the service was shut off for repairs to the almost 100-year-old aqueduct.

The quality of the water service has been declining for most of the last decade; residents say that in the church, water pressure alone was enough to deliver water to the top of the building, whereas now the head of water will not rise above six feet.

San Antonio lies on the Ariguanabo river valley, and has plenty of subsurface water. The problem with its water system has more to do with deferred or ignored maintenance. Almost all pipes have leaks, which not only result in lost water pressure, but deposit water in puddles in numerous spots in town. The only repairs performed recently were done years ago around the area of the supply wells.
