Roundup of motorcyclists who allegedly
carried paying passengers in Cuba
HAVANA, March 19 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén
/ www.cubanet.org) - National police in
the Palma Soriano in Santiago de Cuba province
this week rounded up13 motorcyclists and
gave them warnings for allegedly transporting
paying passengers.
Police blocked the exits from Plaza Martí
at 9 p.m. on March 15, detained the cyclists
and took them to police headquarters where
they were ordered to sign letters of warning.
One of the cyclists said afterwards that
they all refused to sign, preferring to
pay fines of 30 pesos each.
Human rights activist Pedro Enrique Taylor
said: "It was a showy detention. The
police cordoned off the park and detained
the motorcyclists as if they were dangerous
criminals. They were held all night and
until noon of the following day."
Taylor said people were upset at the detentions
because the motorcyclists provide a public
service to residents.
