Artemisa gets ready for the coming war
HAVANA, Cuba, February 27 (www.cubanet.org)
- Since Cuban strategists have concluded
that the "imminent" attack by
troops of the United States will come ashore
on the north coast of Havana province, and
in particular near Mariel, west of the city,
authorities have begun preparing by taking
inventory of the housing in Artemisa, a
town just south of Mariel, in order to determine
where to take the refugees from the combat
zone.
Delegates of the Popular Power (local government)
and members of the Committees for the Defense
of the Revolution in each neighborhood have
told residents about the census, which will
take in the number and condition of housing
units, the number of people, and their capacity
to "face the enemy."
The census will allow authorities to determine
where to route the refugees from the combat
zone just to the north.
One of the residents told the census takers
she would be willing to take in four refugees,
explaining: "I'll take in four people
when the time comes: my son who is married
and lives near Mariel, his wife, her mother,
and my grandson. Nobody else, do you understand?"
Thus authorities prepare for the coming
war, which residents are not taking vary
seriously, making jokes about yet another
story the government is telling them to
distract them from more pressing concerns.
