PINAR DEL RÍO, February 21 (Victor Rolando Arroyo Carmona, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - In what was probably the most crowded Cuban church in the
last four decades, thousands of Catholics in Pinar del Río attended Mass
to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the diocese.
Officiating Pinar del Río bishop Msgr. José Siro González
Bacallao, accompanied by the papal nuncio and several Cuban bishops, urged the
faithful to "remain in Cuba," asking them for a deeper commitment with
the Cuban people.
Varela project organizer Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas' presence
created quite a stir among the crowd. Many milled around after the ceremony,
approaching to speak and have their picture taken with him. Payá remained
for approximately a half-hour, surrounded by the crowd.
"This reminds me of the Pope's visit," said one woman, standing a
little outside the knot of people. She added, "This sort of thing cannot be
pleasing to the government."
