JATIBONICO, February 18 (Pedro Duque Nistal, APLA / www.cubanet.org) - Bread
is a staple of the Cubans' diet, and since the beginning of the year, folks in
Jatibonico, a municipality in central Sancti Spíritus province, have had
a difficult time finding any to buy.
Of the two bakeries in the community, the one belonging to the Cuban Bread
Company, where people knew they could buy a quality bun, is closed. A sign in
the window states simply: "There is no bread due to the poor quality of the
flour."
The other bakery, the one producing the bread sold at subsidized prices
under the government rationing plan, has been an iffy proposition since January
10, when someone discovered there were several tons of flour missing. Officers
from the Technical Investigative department have been on the case, but with no
results apparent to date.
Also, a kneading machine has been broken, slowing down production to a level
below the community's needs.
