Fuel scarcity causes blackouts

CAMAGUEY, February 6 (Enrique López, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) - A scarcity of cooking fuels, such as charcoal, kerosene, and gas, has led residents of Florida, Camagüey province, to improvise electric stoves, overwhelming the local electrical generating plant and leading, in turn, to blackouts.

"If this keeps up, we are going to starve," said one local woman. "We don't have anything to cook with, and the government won't guarantee gas service or sell us another fuel. We are forced to do it in electric hot plates, but if they take away the electricity too, how are we going to feed our children?"
