HAVANA, February 6 (Víctor Manuel Domínguez, Lux Info Press /
www.cubanet.org) - As of last Wednesday, police had confiscated 60 pedicabs
belonging to self-employed operators in Havana, said Milton Meléndez,
general secretary of an independent union of pedicab drivers.
Meléndez said the vehicles were confiscated without regard for
whether their papers were in order or not.
Reportedly passersby reacted angrily to the sight of a caravan of police, 35
strong, taking the pedicabs to the headquarters of the Second Police Unit, in
Central Havana, yelling as they went by: "bullies," "extremists,"
and "they want to force us to walk."
Meléndez said the pedicab operators and their families plan a
campaign to reclaim their vehicles, since they are their only means of making a
living.
