Private sellers banned from market

Armando Soler

HAVANA, February (www.cubanet.org) - Private sellers found themselves unexpectedly banned this week from the market at Santos Suárez and San Benigno Streets, where they had been offering their produce for some time.

About half the stalls were removed and the rest are empty of sellers and produce.

An elderly retiree remonstrated showing her empty shopping bag as evidence: "I have to make do on a 100-peso-a-month pension. I came to see if I could buy something, thinking everything was cheaper, and, as you see, I'm leaving without having bought anything."
