Havana, CUBA.- Leader of the February 24 dissident movement Leonardo Bruzon
Avila, who is on a dry hunger strike in the Combinado del Este prison east of
Havana, is at risk of dying, according to a letter passed from the penitentiary
by imprisoned dissident Jorge Luis Garcia Perez.
47-year-old Leonardo Miguel Bruzon Avila was arrested on February 22, 2002,
while preparing for a commemorative event in the memory of air pilots that were
shot down by Cuban air force over the Florida Straits on February 24, 1996. The
air pilots were flying over sea in search of Cuban rafters sailing to the US
safety so that they would have been picked up by US vessels.
After the arrest a criminal case was opened against Buzon Avila. The
prisoner has begun a hunger strike, seeking clarification of a vaguely
formulated charge brought against him. In the words of Garcia Perez, Leonardo
Bruzon Avila cannot feel his body waste down that suggests he is suffering from
a severe neurological disease. Garcia Perez's letter was circulated by the
emigre group Puente Informativo
