HAVANA, February 3 (Aleida Godínez Soler, Lux Info Press /
www.cubanet.org) - Workers at two government-owned ceramic factories who are
exposed to silica dust have not received the medical check-ups mandated by
government regulations for the last three years.
The 95 workers at the "Julio Antonio Mella" and "Mosaicos II"
plants, located in Pinar del Río province, are supposed to undergo a
check-up and a chest X-ray every six months to detect any possible cases of
silicosis at an early stage. The disease, caused by the inhalation of silica
dust, can be fatal.
The workers also complain that protective measures, such as gloves, face
masks, and air extractors, are seldom up to par in the facilities.
