MATANZAS, February 3 (Caridad Díaz Beltrán, Lux Info Press /
www.cubanet.org) - Tax authorities in Matanzas province said last year 722
self-employed workers accumulated fines of 152,900 pesos (about 5,880 U. S.
dollars) for violations of government regulations.
In addition, Teodoro Ascuy, a technician with the local office of the Tax
administration, said the self-employed accumulated debts with the authority of
188,000 pesos (7,230 U. S. dollars) for unauthorized sales.
Self-employment in some strictly-defined fields has been allowed by the
government only in the last ten years as a means of alleviating the economic
crisis that followed the fall of the Soviet Union.
