SANTA CLARA, January 30 (Omar Ruiz, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - The
Municipal Housing Authority in Santa Clara, central Cuba, issued eviction
notices to 49 families who live in housing belonging to the Cuban Air Force near
the base here.
Most of those affected are women who were once married to Air Force
personnel and their children. The Housing Authority said the housing belongs to
the Armed Forces Ministry and the families are no longer entitled to occupy
them.
Housing is extremely difficult to secure in Cuba due to a critical shortage,
and people typically fight eviction efforts any way they can.
Some measures are already under way to force the families to vacate, said
one resident, adding that a tenant, Rosa Lidia Castro, had had her gas service
cut off.
