HOLGUÍN, January 30 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - A
drunken brawl at the "Los Naranjos" prison in San Germán, Holguín
province, resulted in at least nine wounded and an indeterminate number of
inmates unaccounted for and presumably escaped.
News of the event and some details were revealed in a note smuggled out of
the prison from political prisoner Arnaldo Nicot.
A quantity of home-brewed spirits were smuggled into the prison, presumably
by one of the guards. During the night of January 16-17, a riot broke out in
prison blocks 1 and 2, involving over 100 inmates fighting with sticks, stones,
and in some cases, prison-made shivs.
The riot lasted more than one hour, until military units arrived in full
anti-riot gear and quelled the revolt.
