Cuban merchant fleet makes do without pursers

HAVANA, September 26 (Armando Soler / www.cubanet.org) - Only 30 of 100 pursers carried in the rolls of Empresa de Navegación Mambisa are currently employed, said one of the unemployed ones.

"I haven’t sailed in years," said the man, who normally would mind the cargo and passengers aboard cargo ships.

The eight shipping lines that usually contract personnel from Empresa de Navegación Mambisa prefer not to carry a purser, said the man.

"The lines operate without us; it seems that we are a hindrance because we represent the State economically," he said.

At present, the Cuban merchant fleet consists of about 20 ships in seaworthy condition.
