GÜINES, September 25 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Drivers of tanker trucks provided by the government to
deliver water to areas that have experienced an interruption in service
routinely sell the water, said irate residents of Batey Cruz, a small community
outside the town of Güines, south of Havana. The town has been without
regular water service since September 17.
The going price for a water delivery is 50 pesos, or about two dollars, but
it can go up for difficulty deliveries.
"There are four of us at home. I had to pay 50 pesos to the driver of a
tanker that belongs to the municipal water works to fill a hundred-gallon tank
at home," said Ramón Delgado, a local resident.
Jorge Delgado, however, had to pay double, because the road to the farm in
which he lives is in bad shape.
Regular water service was interrupted because a water main broke. "Repairs
will take ten days," said a source at the municipal water authority.
